Update — Sunday, March 6, 2016: Starting Monday, March 7, YRT is operating free shuttle service to help pedestrians travel through the work zone.
York Region is widening
- Highway 7 between east of Sciberras Road and Town Centre Boulevard / South Town Centre Boulevard
from four to six lanes. The wider roadway will help manage travel demand and match up to the new section of Viva rapidways to the west.
During the first phase of construction this summer, Highway 7 remained open to traffic, but crews shifted traffic lanes to the north side so they could work on the south side of the highway.
On the south side of Highway 7 they:
- replaced a City of Markham water-main;
- installed storm sewers, street lighting and sidewalks; and
- widened the road
To prepare for major construction along the north side of Highway 7 next year, crews have now shifted traffic lanes to the south side. Workers are relocating utilities this winter, likely continuing to delay regular traffic and York Region Transit buses operating along the 1 Highway 7 route.
Construction along Highway 7 continues until 2017.
